September Thoughts

Gaze out the windows. The light of September is golden and everything seems bathed in that golden light. Leaves are turning. The heat has broken for this year; night-time temperatures have fallen. The day shortens. Gardeners can no longer start work at 7:00 a.m., must wait until 8:00. We can work until almost eight p.m. In a few months we will plan to stop earlier, for by five o'clock the light will be too dim.

Until then, we have the golden light of September to spend.

"I cannot endure to waste anything as precious as autumn sunshine by staying in the house. So I spend almost all the daylight hours in the open air."
Nathaniel Hawthorne

Fall weather is supposed to arrive here in north Texas at the first of the week. I can't wait. Fall is my favorite season. Nice post.

Aunt Debbi/kurts mom (Texas, U.S.A.): Thank you, Debbi. I love this time of year, too. Time for good apple cider!

It's a beautiful shot of the fall woods. Like you, I'm taking advantage of the golden light remaining to enjoy the outdoors. Right now there is beautiful leaf colour both above and below.

What a lovely post to celebrate my favorite season next to spring. It's nice to have some cooler weather after a long hot summer. Great time of the year to really get some real work done in the garden.

Northern Shade (Canada): Thank you, it is a shot back in the Woodland Garden. Your season is a bit ahead of ours. We are nowhere near leaf-fall, but it is on its way.

perennialgardener (Virginia, U.S.A.): Oh, yes! A wonderful time of year. I wish it could be this temp the year around.

Roses and stuff (Sweden): Thank you, Katarina. Here in the states, September is second only to June as the favorite month for weddings.

Loved the picture and the quote underneath. I remember Nathaniel Hawthorne from the card game, Authors...when I was growing up.Do they play that anymore?

Thanks for another lovely, evocative post, Barbee'! I cannot bear to waste one second of the precious, beautiful fall, whether I'm indoors looking out or outdoors looking everywhere. I have always loved it for its clarity and colors, but I wonder if it's all the more precious because we know the winter is coming?

Balisha (Illinois, U.S.A.): Ha, ha, Balisha, I doubt it. If the game doesn't need batteries or electricity, the young people I know wouldn't be interested. I remember playing Authors and Old Maid. I am glad I grew up back then when it was quieter and calmer. Thank you for the positive feedback; I am glad you enjoyed it.

ourfriendben (Pennsylvania, U.S.A.): I think you are correct in your wondering; at least, that is the way it is for me. Also, it is a rather short period, too. So, the two things together make it quite the lovely gem. Thank you, Ben.

I would be happy for it to be autumn all year round.

I like the way it smells.

I find heat difficult so, at last, I should be outside not wilting.

Looks as though Dorset autumn started today with wind and bursts of rain. As long as it doesn't jump straight to winter and miss the nice out the nice bit!

I love your quote by Hawthorne. I can certainly relate to that! I love being outside!

esther montgomery (England): I know what you mean, Esther, some years we have gone straight from summer to winter. We still had the pretty autumn foliage, but out came the coats and sweaters a bit earlier than usual. Each year I become more and more sensitive to heat, so I am enjoying this cooler weather. It is beautiful today: cool temperature and full sunshine.

philip bewley (California, U.S.A.): Hi there; today we are having California kind of weather! I love being out there, too. Even with sun protection, I am practically one huge freckle.
