Horses

Not everyone is interested in horses, but of those who are, most know about the legendary Kentucky horses.

I was reminded of a post I wrote for my website when I picked up our local newspaper one day this week. Front page featured an article about opening day at Keeneland's January sales, including a four column photograph of the beautiful mare Azeri, who was 2002's Horse of the Year.

Apparently the economic recession has reached even into the pockets of the rich and famous in horse-world circles. This week the high and final bid for Azeri was $4.4 million, but that did not reach the seller's reserve... therefore, no sale. Last year her first foal, Vallenzeri, failed to sell at a bid of $7.7 million.

If these prices intrigue you, or if you just enjoy reading about the horse industry, you may be interested in reading the post I referred to. The post was written for a group of approximately thirty friends who were coming here to attend a day at charming Keeneland thoroughbred race tract during beautiful October. They had never been to a horse race before. The post served to prepare them by giving background information.

I have some Gorgeous pictures from our late summer visit to the Kentucky Horse Park. (It ranks second, after Disney World, in the kids favorite places. Even above our year and a half in New Zealand.)

Just stopping to say hi. You weren't actively blogging when I joined blotanical, so I still haven't gotten to know you:( I'm going to follow you and add you to my sidebar. Tell me if it's not ok with you.
My daughter rides horses. She's with the equestrian team now at her college. She's been riding since she was 8. However, we don't do the racing that you're referring to:) But, just thought I'd mention that since you brought up horses;)

No kidding. How can 4.4 million dollars not be enough? I suppose when you're used to more it could be a bit dissappointing but still, it's nothing to sneeze at.

Thank you for comment :) It's always lovely to remember summer and all the plants that I miss. Now we have snow cover..

One of my care horse was Another Geisha, who was grandmother of the fastest 3 year old standardbred called Donato Hanover. That lady knew her value. It was a bit shock to her to move from New York to Finland at February, when here was freezing cold and lot of snow. :)

Sadly Geisha died and had only one foal. She was a nice horse.

For a brief while I worked for an insurance company that insured Northern Dancer's offspring. My task was to record date and sex of each of these horses as they were born. Being a real novice, I made the tactical mistake of congratulating the owner on their new filly - she quite pointedly explained that in this business - you only congratulate someone when they have a colt. Ouch - it's a remarkable rarified world isn't it.

I know this post is very old, but it is worth a shot. The previous poster "quu" said that they had taken care of Another Geisha before she passed away...I have one of her sons, and he is a lovely animal! Was just wondering how she passed and if anyone has photos of her....

I know this post is very old, but it worth a shot. The previous poster "quu" stated that they took care of Another Geisha before she passed. I have one of her sons, a lovely horse named Affaro Hanover and I was wondering how she passed, and if there are any photos available of her. Thanks!
