Tasha Tudor, May She Rest In Peace

I received an e-mail message by "Early Bird Post" from Tasha's family with the sub-heading: "Farewell June 2008"
Subject Line: Tasha Tudor, 1915-2008

Here is the message:
"It is with great sadness that we must tell you Tasha Tudor, 92, passed away in her Vermont home on June 18, 2008 surrounded by family and friends. We have created an online memorial website and invite all who loved Tasha to share their feelings and memories in the Memory Book section. Memorial Website

The office of Tasha Tudor and Family is closed for the time being and will reopen on June 30th.

Due to the extensive travel plans of our national and international guests, the Secret Garden Tours of Tasha Tudor and Family will proceed as scheduled. They will, however, be led by our capable staff, instead of the family.

We thank you for supporting Tasha Tudor's lifestyle and artwork during her long career. We hope that Tasha's message of 'taking joy' in all that one does will be remembered as we pass through this difficult time together.

-The Tudor Family

The gloom of the world is but a shadow; behind it, yet, within our reach, is joy. Take Joy.
Fra Giovanni"

We say goodbye to a most remarkable woman and gardener. Goodbye, Tasha, we love you; I know heaven is even more beautiful now that you are there. I hope you will be allowed to tend a corner where there are sweetpeas, violas, and dianthus. And, where corgi angels scramble at your heels. You have earned your rest.

Oh thank you for telling me... I'm so sad about this! When I think about my childhood, and all the dear things that I remember, it always includes "A" is for Annabelle.
Thank you for stopping by my blog

What a role model Tasha was! I had just posted "A Tasha Tudor tribute" on Poor Richard's Almanac on June 15th to express my enormous admiration for her life and work, and was so saddened when I, too, was informed by Early Bird Post that she had died just three days later. but what a life! I'm so glad that you also appreciate her.

I loved Tasha. I have her book...Drawn from New England and Betty Crocker's Kitchen Gardens which was illustrated by her. She led such an interesting life. A friend of mine saw a presentation by Tasha, telling about her lifestyle.I shared her love of painting.Glad I "knew" her.

I'm so sad to read this. I've loved Tasha ever since my aunt gave me a copy of The Secret Garden for my birthday when I was about ten years old.

Thank you Barbee, for your email letting me know. I was a student of hers and she inspired my artwork greatly throughout the years. A graceful angel and her Spirit will remain throughout eternity. She will be missed, as she is dearly loved. I have some of her books and visit them often when I am reminded to take the child like approach to life. Her love of life and all things magical and precious. She was a pioneering woman after my own heart. The world is a better place because of her and truly her influence will remain in our hearts forever.

Thanks for posting this sad news. I have been a Tasha Tudor fan for many years. I was always amazed about how she lived her life on her farm. She certainly left a legacy.

Lovely tribute to an admirable woman. I discovered her through her garden, but my daughter is the real fan. She loves the Corgiville books. (Okay, I do too.)

Barbee, thank you for passing along the news, though sad it is. I was touring an historic house this weekend and thought of Tasha Tudor when I peeked into the children's room at an elaborate puppet theater display from the 1850's. I'm so glad I was introduced to her work 10 years ago. How much it has enhanced my life.

Dee, Meadowview Thymes, Mr. McGregor's Daughter, Elle: Thank you for taking the time to leave your comments. Each comment leaves stokes of paint; putting them all together we get the picture a little clearer of her many facets and what she meant to many people. Different people relate to her in different ways.

To me it is that: she was so down to earth, unassuming, and most of all... multi talented.

Thank you, Anna. I am glad you came by and left your comment. I appreciate that. She had been very much in my thoughts the past two years, for I knew her age, and that the sands of time were running out for her. I hope her family will continue to keep the memory of her and how special she was alive forever. She has two sons and two daughters, and so do we. I am in awe of how she lived her alternate lifestyle and reared those children as a single parent after her husband left because he wanted to live in the modern world.
