I once had a huge compost bin (3/4 full), near a seldom-used clothesline, in which I planted six 'Sweet 100' tomato plants. By season end, they were tied to seven foot stakes, fastened up over the entire clothesline and across an adjacent fence. Most productive vines I ever grew and I kept adding kitchen scraps and garden waste throughout the summer. Fed them with Neptune's Harvest fish/seaweed blend every 7-10 days, for an extra boost.

My rather congested suburban yard is largely shaded, so most of veggies are container grown, to take advantage of available sun.

Great blog, by the way - I'll be back, as time allows... between writing six blogs, including a 4-page monthly garden newsletter, working at a garden center and tending my own gardens. You're right - it's a busy time of year!.....DebAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2683241997705053264.post-19514706826647219232008-06-21T15:39:00.000-04:002008-06-21T15:39:00.000-04:00Jean Ann: What a treat to hear from you. If you are pestered by critters damaging your tomatoes, you might want to leave them inside the fenced area.

OFBen: Hi! Mmmm, Brandywine-tomato stuffed chickens, do you cook them with a little tarragon?

Lostlandscape: I know what you mean about the flimsy pre-fab cages, they don't do well with the large vining indeterminate plants. I have never grown the other kind; those cages may work for them. I don't know.

Kate in NJ: Sounds as though you and your garden are very successfu! I am wondering if I should grow something other than tomatoes in that ring some years to keep disease from building up. Maybe I should not have such a permanent structure after all. I didn't think of that at the time. Maybe next year I should grow some type of climbing beans.Barbee'https://www.blogger.com/profile/11316077390373348067noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2683241997705053264.post-17276053252205587022008-06-19T12:27:00.000-04:002008-06-19T12:27:00.000-04:00That sounds pretty good, thanks for sharing it.We ...That sounds pretty good, thanks for sharing it.We wrap our late season tomatoes in newspaper and box them up every year and almost always have tomatoes from our garden on our table come Thanksgiving.Garden State Katehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10990374136605207993noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2683241997705053264.post-50439518371220989652008-06-19T01:29:00.000-04:002008-06-19T01:29:00.000-04:00I've grown frustrated of the pre-fab tomato cages ...I've grown frustrated of the pre-fab tomato cages which do such a poor job of supporting the plants.
